Data sources

Before we perform external scans of your organization’s network, we research your organizational structure and then search through internet protocol (IP) registration information to compile a list of all public IP addresses registered to your organization.

Research

Using your organization's name, we analyze public information and determine your hierarchical structure. We find the names of the organizations within the hierarchy and identify the names of additional companies, subsidiaries, or other entities in which your organization has a vested interest.

We also identify search terms to help our scan engine find IP registration information. Typically, search terms are variations of the organization and descendant organization names. For example, name variations for the National Example Company could include:

  • National Example Company
  • National Example Company, Inc
  • National Example Company Inc.
  • NEC

Record searches

Next, we search databases of registration records using the organization names in the hierarchy to find your Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs), netblocks, and registered domain names. We then search third-party data to find subdomains from your domain names and trace your registration information back to IP addresses.

Change requests

As your organization changes, you can submit change requests to update the details we use to scan your network.

Change requests enable you to work with SixMap to modify the raw information we identified during our initial research and record searches. For example, you can request that we add domain names or remove IP addresses and prefixes from your scan. You can also request updates to the order of the organizations within your hierarchy. We then verify the changes and modify your organization’s details according to your specifications. For more information, see Submit change requests.

tip

To submit change requests, you must have the Organization manager or Admin role.
