Ports
Ports are software-based identification numbers that represent connection endpoints within machine operating systems. They enable data exchanges across networks, such as web pages and email. Each machine has 65,535 possible ports, which are divided into system (well-known), registered, and private ranges.
- System ports, sometimes known as well-known ports, are in the range of 0-1023 and typically require admin access. The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) assigns specific services to them, such as SSH, email, DNS, and HTTP.
- Registered ports range from 1024 to 49151. IANA designates them for use with standardized protocols, applications, and services.
- Private ports, also known as dynamic or ephemeral ports, are in the range of 49152-65535. Unlike system and registered ports, IANA doesn't designate them for specific purposes. Instead, a machine's operating system often uses them temporarily during a session with a server.
To identify open ports in your network, we scan all of your organization's active IP addresses. If a port is open, we also identify which service is running. From the Ports page, you can view details about open ports we found across your IPv4 and IPv6 deployments.
Ports table
The Ports table includes the open ports in your networks. It also shows the instances that are open on IPv4 and IPv6 addresses and the port range for each. Use the information to understand the distribution of your IPv4 and IPv6 deployments and the disparity between where ports are open on each deployment.
For information about table options, see Tables.
Columns and filters
-
To add or remove information in the table, select Columns and choose the columns to view.
-
To view and manage ports that meet specific criteria, such as only those that are open on IPv6 addresses, select Filters and then select how to narrow the data.
Name | Description |
---|---|
Port | Open port in your networks. |
IPv4 count | Number of IPv4 addresses that have the port open. |
IPv6 count | Number of IPv6 addresses that have the port open. |
Port range | Whether the port is in the system, registered, or private port category. |
IP address | Filter for finding ports running service, product, and version combinations on an IP address or within an IP address range. |
Service | Filter for finding ports running services. |
Product | Filter for finding ports running products. |
Version | Filter for finding ports running product versions. |
Service tags | Filter for finding ports based on reasons the services running on them are potentially vulnerable. For details, see Tags. |
Organization | Filter for finding ports associated with an organization from your hierarchy. |
